This is a rare opportunity to own a genuine German built and factory Right Hand Drive supplied VW Split Screen from 1955. It is very seldom that we get to offer a bus this early for sale and this was in fact the first year of production of the VW T1 Microbus following on from the earlier ‘Barn Door’ model that stopped production early in 1955. This bus has been owned locally to us for many years. The bus has been lovingly restored orchestrated by the previous owner using renowned local specialists to us. Painted in stunning period colours.
The Dashboard is completely as it should be having survived the decades without being drilled and hacked into. A fuel gauge has been tastefully retrofitted into the overhead air intake access plate above your head as buses this early never had them from factory. Uprated 1600cc Reconditioned engine starts on the button and pulls wonderfully throughout the gears. Gearbox fully rebuilt by renowned specialists at Cogbox and incorporating a taller 4th gear to cope with higher end speeds. Uprated braking system includes servo assistance and full front disc brake conversion for far superior stopping power and the old fashioned steering box has also been upgraded to the Creative Engineering steering rack and pinion setup. The bus sits on an adjustable front beam and Creative Engineering IRS (Independent Rear Suspension). This gives for far better handling, braking and performance more suited for modern traffic. This overall setup comes at an enormous expense and is renowned by enthusiasts as the ‘ultimate mechanical setup’ providing a much better driving experience.
Professionally installed headliner in perforated off white vinyl including a bespoke made rear overhead locked trimmed neatly in matching white vinyl looks and feels luxurious. The original front full width bench seat is present and in the rear there is a full width Rock n’ Roll bed (Rusty Lee – Best available on the market) with a three piece bed cushion set. There is currently a small rear facing cabinet, Kenwood sound system and speakers, 12V sockets and a full curtain track set with new curtains and matching cushions.
6X side opening pop out windows, front polished stainless safari windows and rear opening safari window from Creative Engineering totalling over £2,000 just in window upgrades!
