1965 Volkswagen Split Screen Camper Van – Show Winning Condition –
Proudly offered for sale. This is one of the very best Volkswagen buses that we have ever seen! The attention to detail on this restoration is incredible and a true testament to the workmanship of the previous owner, who owned his own classic Volkswagen restoration company.
Complete with its original VIN Plate and M Code plate, this bus also has the all-important ‘Birth Certificate’ from Germany that confirms it as a genuine UK supplied Right Hand Drive ‘Delivery Van’. The bus left the factory on 11th October 1965. Like the vast majority of other VW Split Screens on the road, it has now been converted to allow for a camping interior to be installed, which can be decided as per the new owner’s specification. Details below.
This bus has undergone a ‘nut & bolt restoration’. That means that every single mechanical component has been removed from the shell to allow for the best access to metal work before paint and reassembly. This has gone to the extreme lengths to achieve the best possible standard.
These buses never had sufficient rust protection from new, which is why they are renowned for rust and after 50 to 60 years of service, there is often not a lot of solid metal left on the shell. Fortunately, as there is such a high demand for pressed metal amongst enthusiasts, almost every single panel is available. As such, this bus has had the most extensive metalwork restoration we have ever seen. There is a folder of over 350 detailed photographs showing the extent of the restoration and I can safely say this bus is amongst the top 1% of most solid / structurally safe buses in the world. Every single spec of rust has been cut out and replaced before the entire shell has been carefully prepared, primed and painted inside and out in year correct, original VW colours; Turkis Green / Blauweiss. The bus has also been carefully treated underneath with the use of clear Waxoyl before reassembly to prevent any future rust issues from occurring. This is the best product available in my opinion for rust treatment as due to its clarity, you can see exactly what lies beneath it!
Once the entire shell was in paint, the refit of mechanical components began. This included dropped spindles on the front, a Type 3 straight axle conversion on the rear to allow the bus to cruise at 70MPH (unlike the original setup which limits you to 50-55MPH max), Reconditioned 1500SP engine fitted with 1600cc barrels and pistons (pulls like a train), new 12V wiring loom, new braking system throughout. Reconditioned steering box. The ultimate mechanical specification to allow for the smoothest ride quality and optimum performance. The bus has covered a mere 500 miles since restoration so the engine has not even been run in yet!
Restoring a bus to this level involves thousands of labour hours and an enormous financial input which would far exceed the asking price should you have one built from scratch, not to mention the several years it could potentially take to build a bus to this standard.
Headliner professionally installed in year correct perforated off white vinyl, a brand new door card set, freshly upholstered front seats and carpets. Should the colour choices inside not suit your preference, just let us know and we can exchange them in any colours of your choice.
The bus currently has a simple Rock n’ roll bed setup and a blank canvas to allow for one of our bespoke built camping interiors, Instead of fitting one ourselves at this stage, we have chosen to allow for the new owner(s) to decide exactly what interior they would like. As we specialise in the builds of these interiors, we are able to offer a wide variety of options / layouts which can include any appliances such as gas cookers, sinks, cool boxes, fridges etc. There are no limits and as interiors are very much down to personal preference, this option is the perfect solution that allows you to configure the interior exactly how you want it and also to be the very first people to use it in what will be ‘brand new’ condition. There are examples of our interior work available to view on our website but please contact us should you wish for something specific. Pop Top Conversions and any other modifications can be carried out as per request.
